Prince Gajendra Babu Advocates for Equal Educational Opportunities for All Children in Tamil Nadu

Prince Gajendra Babu, the state secretary for the public schools’ platform, emphasized the need for equal learning opportunities for all children in Tamil Nadu.

Coimbatore: Speaking at the Coimbatore Press Club, Prince Gajendra Babu, the General Secretary of the State Platform for Common Schools, asserted that the Tamil Nadu government must ensure equal learning opportunities for all children by designating all government and government-aided schools as neighborhood schools. He emphasized the significance of the Education Rights Act in facilitating the equal right to education.

Prince Gajendra Babu highlighted the contradictions in private schools showing bias towards students. He mentioned that, in line with the objectives, schools should reserve at least 25% of opportunities for marginalized and underprivileged groups. He stressed that neighborhood school systems, seen internationally, ensure educational equity supported both by the government's mandate and expenditure.

With the upcoming education year of 2024-2025, he suggested that both government and aided schools should notably increase the educational opportunities to achieve this parity. He pointed out that Karnataka has successfully implemented such measures for the past five years.

When the government takes responsibility for providing education under Section 12(1)(c) of the Right to Education Act, it must not contradict sections 8 and 12(1)(c). Additionally, when the government leads in ensuring educational rights, it has the judiciary's support. The State Platform for Common Schools has pressed the Tamil Nadu government to issue timely notifications for student admissions for the 2024-2025 academic year and to create ample opportunities for multidisciplinary learning at no additional cost.
