Farmers Stage Sit-in at Kangayam Tahsildar Office to Protest Against Unauthorized Substation Construction

Farmers in Kangayam, Vellakovil staged a sit-in at the local Tahsildar's office demanding a halt to unauthorized construction of a substation on agricultural land, which breaches earlier assurances.

Tirupur: Farmers in the vicinity of Vellakovil near Kangayam have engaged in a continuous sit-in protest at the Kangayam Tahsildar's office. The demonstration is a response to the alleged breach of promises by Tata Power, which involved the illegal construction of a substation on agricultural land.

The agitation began after Tata Power failed to halt the ongoing construction activities, contrary to prior commitments made to the local farming community.

Members of the farmers' community, along with local and regional agricultural union leaders, gathered in significant numbers to voice their opposition. Over 200 individuals participated, underlining the community's unrest. The protestors are demanding a permanent cessation of the construction work, citing that it significantly devalues the agricultural land and compromises their livelihoods.

These developments follow revelations that the Tata Power initiative intended to route high-voltage power lines from the newly built substation at Moothanayakkan Valasu in Kangayam to Dharapuram, covering a distance of approximately 20 kilometers without proper clearances from relevant authorities including DTCP and village councils.

The ongoing constructions have commenced without any of the requisite permissions, involving the modification of the site to suit industrial operations, thus directly contravening the designated agricultural use of the land. Farmers have been left particularly vulnerable, relying solely on the land's value for their economic sustenance.
