High Alcohol Sales on Labour Day in Udumalai Due to Police Negligence

On Labour Day, despite a declared holiday, rampant alcohol sales persisted in Udumalai, under Tiruppur District, raising concerns among local activists.

Coimbatore: On Labour Day, as the working-class commemorates with a public holiday, TASMAC shops in Udumalai, part of Tiruppur District, saw unusually high alcohol sales. Ordinarily, these shops would remain closed, but this was not the case, as reports indicate ongoing and unabated sales near major landmarks like the Anusam Theatre, the government liquor store front, the union office, and along the route to Malayandigoundanur. Despite the holiday, the locales where alcohol was sold, seemed to ignore the significance of the day meant to honor labor martyrs.

Local social activists have expressed their discontent, noting that this commercial activity disrespects the memory of the labor movement heroes. The unregulated sales have not only marked a disrespect, but have also brought up serious questions about the efficiency and attentiveness of the local police authorities, who did not take necessary actions to curb these sales. Public dissatisfaction is evident, and there is a strong call for identifying those involved in the sale and ensuring appropriate measures are taken to regulate such activities in the future.

The incident has highlighted the need for better enforcement of regulations especially on significant public holidays, ensuring that the true essence of such observances is maintained, and not overshadowed by commercial interests.
