Savukku Shankar Arrested by Coimbatore Cybercrime Police in Theni

Savukku Shankar was arrested in Theni by Coimbatore Cybercrime police over accusations regarding his recent remarks about women police officers. He is being transported to Coimbatore for official charges and court presentation.



Coimbatore: In a significant development, social media commentator Savukku Shankar was apprehended by the Coimbatore Cybercrime police unit in Theni. The arrest follows allegations related to Shankar's recent disparaging statements directed at female police officers. Reportedly, these remarks prompted an investigation which culminated in his arrest.

Shankar is currently being transported to Coimbatore, where formal charges will be lodged against him. He is expected to be presented in front of a magistrate for his court hearing upon arrival. The police have not yet released a detailed statement regarding the nature of the remarks that led to his arrest but have informed it will be made soon. 

His Earlier Cases and Arrests

Savukku Shankar was sentenced to six months in jail by the Madras High Court on September 15, 2022, for his contempt of court charges. Savukku Shankar, a well-known YouTuber, faced legal challenges from G Square Realtors who filed a case against him seeking a restraining order and damages amounting to approximately Rs 1 crore. The Madras High Court issued an order restraining Shankar from making any further comments about G Square Realtors. The court's decision was influenced by various statements made by Shankar, which the company claimed were defamatory and negatively impacted their business. 

In related proceedings, Justice GR Swaminathan of the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court sentenced Shankar to six months in jail for contempt of court, related to his remarks against the judiciary. The court noted that Shankar showed no remorse for his actions, which included allegations that the judiciary was corrupt. This judgment stemmed from multiple contempt cases against him over time. 

This incident has sparked considerable discussion on social media platforms, highlighting concerns over the boundaries of free speech and the protection of public servants from defamatory attacks.
