Social Media Commentator Savukku Shankar Remanded to Judicial Custody Until May 17 by Coimbatore Court

Savukku Shankar, a YouTuber, has been remanded to a 14-day judicial custody by the First Additional Sessions Court, Coimbatore, under Judge Gopalakrishnan, following his arrest by the Coimbatore Cyber Crime Police.

Coimbatore: Following recent events, Social Media Commentator Savukku Shankar currently finds himself under judicial remand. On the orders of the First Additional Sessions Judge Gopalakrishnan, Shankar will remain in custody until May 17. The decision came after Shankar was arrested by the Coimbatore Cyber Crime unit for allegedly using defamatory language against police officials and female constables.

According to the Cyber Crime Assistant Investigator Suganya, Shankar faces charges under IPC Sections 294(b) (uttering obscene words), 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), and under the Information Technology Act, 2000 Section 67 (misuse of technology).

The arrest ensued shortly after his medical examination at the Coimbatore Government Hospital. Upon being brought to the Coimbatore court complex, DMK's women's wing members staged a protest, encircling the police vehicle that brought Shankar, and raised slogans condemning his actions. This spirited confrontation underscored the heated atmosphere following the allegations.

Further complications arose as the Theni district police in Palanisettipatti reportedly seized half a kilogram of cannabis from Shankar's car, adding a drug case to his list of charges. These unfurling events kept Shankar in a continual spotlight, pointing to a deeper tangle of legal and public relations issues that he will now face behind bars.

Savukku Shankar vehemently disputed the allegations during his court appearance, accusing the "Stalin family of using their influence to harness false cases against him to obstruct the freedom of his media outlet, Saukku Media." As he was escorted from the court to Coimbatore Central Jail, his allegations resonated amidst the bustling crowd, reflecting the contentious nature of his arrest and the polarized responses it has elicited.
