Coimbatore: A disturbing incident came to light when Ravikumar, a 56-year-old laundry worker from Pothanur, was sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl. The verdict was delivered on May 16 by the Coimbatore POCSO Court, emphasizing the gravity of the offense.
The girl, studying in third grade, had gone to pick up some clothes from a laundry shop in Pothanur on May 19, 2023, where the perpetrator worked. Ravikumar lured the minor into the shop and committed the assault. The child's mother soon reported the incident to the Pothanur Police Station, which led to Ravikumar’s arrest under the POCSO Act.
During the court proceedings, Judge Kulashekaran found Ravikumar guilty and besides the prison term, imposed a fine of ₹5,000. Furthermore, the judge ordered a compensation of ₹2 lakhs to be paid to the victim for the trauma caused by the heinous act.
Notable contributions to the case were made by Inspector Anand Jothi and woman police officer Suganya, who played crucial roles in the investigation.
