Truckers' strike to intensify

Supply of essential items may be severely hit as truckers have announced a nationwide strike from Saturday, truckers' association representatives said.

Truckers in south India, who are on strike since March 30, will be joined by their counterparts elsewhere in the country, as talks between the truckers' association and finance ministry officials failed on Friday. The cab drivers' association in Bengaluru said they will monitor the situation on Saturday and take a call on joining the strike.

G R Shanmugappa, president, Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Association, said 60 lakh trucks will stay off the roads all over the country from Saturday till their demands are met.
