Stranded Elephant Calf Relocated to Mudumalai Elephant Camp

Early today, a stranded elephant calf was sent to Mudumalai Elephant Camp after failing to reunite with its mother in Maruthamalai, despite four days of efforts by forest officials.

Coimbatore: In a poignant wildlife intervention, a young elephant calf, unable to reunite with its mother, was relocated to the Mudumalai Elephant Camp at 4:30 AM today. The calf had been separated from its recuperating mother in the western part of Maruthamalai hills, where a 40-year-old female elephant had previously been treated and released back into the forest.

The forest officials made several attempts over four days to reintegrate the calf with its herd but were ultimately unsuccessful, leading to the decision to transfer the calf to a more secure environment in Mudumalai. The mother elephant, after receiving treatment, had already rejoined another group within the forest.

The calf, barely four months old and previously cohabitating with a different group, will now join two other young elephants under care at the Camp, adding to the rescued juveniles at this refuge.
