The Coimbatore Regional Passport Office is set to introduce RFID chip-embedded e-passports soon, according to the Regional Officer. Last year, the office issued 177,000 passports, and efforts are being made to increase this number in the coming year. Passports are being issued not only through Passport Seva Kendras but also via Post Office Passport Seva Kendras. Special arrangements have been made in the head post offices located in Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Nilgiris, Salem, and Namakkal districts for this purpose. In the Nilgiris district, these procedures are being followed at the Coonoor head post office.
ECR (Emigration Check Required) passports are issued to individuals aged 18 to 50 who have studied below the 10th grade. Those traveling for employment to countries such as Indonesia, Libya, Kuwait, Lebanon, Iraq, Malaysia, Sudan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, UAE, and Afghanistan must obtain permission from the emigration department before their journey. For those who have studied below the 10th grade, aged 18 to 50, and are migrating to these countries, an ECNR (Emigration Check Not Required) passport will be issued if they are income tax payers.
For applicants born on or after October 1, 2023, a birth certificate is mandatory. Aadhaar is used solely for address verification. The application fee of Rs. 1,500 for a passport is to be paid online. An additional fee of Rs. 2,000 is charged for obtaining a Tatkal passport through the Passport Seva Kendra. Efforts are underway to fully transition these processes online with the implementation of Passport Seva Kendra Version 2. Additionally, to enhance the transparency and security of travel documents, the process of issuing RFID chip-embedded e-passports is in full swing and will be implemented soon.
