Mayor Kalpana Anandakumar and Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran inaugurated Rs. 1.33 crore worth of new vehicles for sanitation under a self-employment scheme in Coimbatore, enhancing the capabilities of sanitation workers.

Coimbatore: In an initiative towards improving the working conditions of sanitation workers, Coimbrate Mayor Kalpana Anandakumar, along with City Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran, flagged off new vehicles valued at Rs. 1.33 crore under a self-employment scheme. The ceremony took place at the municipal corporation’s vehicle yard located in RS Puram, Brooke Bond Road, under Ward No. 70 of the Central Zone today.

The vehicles are part of the initiative to bolster various cleanliness and solid waste management operations across parts of Coimbatore. They align with the Human Waste Handling Law of 2013, aiming to provide dignified livelihood alternatives for sanitation workers. Divided into three teams, 14 sanitation workers have been actively involved under this scheme, which also includes advanced equipment like a Septic Tank Cleaning Truck with a capacity of 6000 liters costing around Rs. 46 lakh, a Jetting, Grabbing, and Rodding Machine costing Rs. 50 lakh, and an Open Drain Cleaning Machine worth Rs. 37 lakh.

Mayor Kalpana Anandakumar and Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran emphasized the importance of these vehicles in ensuring efficient and increased revenue operations. Contracts have been made to deploy these vehicles in various sanitation tasks throughout Coimbatore, with a sharing of revenues to the involved sanitation workers. Furthermore, the funding scheme provides a 38% grant, a 5% interest rate, and up to 7 years of repayment period, including a 6-month moratorium on interest payments.

Other dignitaries present at the event included Deputy Corporation Commissioner K. Sivakumar, Zone South group leader R. Danalakshmi, Public Health Group leader P. Marichselvan, and several members of the municipal council, who collectively highlighted the potential impact of these resources on the sanitation department’s efficiency and the workers’ welfare.
