Tamil Nadu Government has issued orders to provide sweet pongal along with midday meals in schools on the birthdays of prominent personalities, allocating Rs. 4.27 crores for this initiative.
Coimbatore: In a recent government order, Tamil Nadu has mandated the inclusion of sweet pongal in the midday meal scheme to be served in schools on the birthdays of important figures. Previously, sweet pongal was provided on these occasions without the regular nutritious meal. Now, both will be combined to enhance the nutritional value of the offering to school children.
The directive applies to students from 1st to 10th grades under the MGR Nutritious Meal Scheme. According to the order, an additional allocation of Rs. 4,27,19,530 has been reserved for this purpose. This move ensures that all students benefiting from the daily meals receive this festive addition on specified significant dates.
Moreover, anganwadi workers and meal organizers are instructed to adjust their daily food budget accordingly to include the necessary items such as rice and jaggery for the preparation of sweet pongal. This initiative aims to both celebrate cultural heritage and enhance the nutritive intake of children on these special occasions.
