Over 200 Participants Thrill at 7th State Level Kalaripayattu Competition in Madathukulam

Madathukulam witnessed the 7th Tamil Nadu State Level Kalaripayattu Competition, inaugurated by local dignitaries, participating over 200 athletes from various age groups showcasing diverse martial arts techniques.

The Kaniyur Cholamadevi Akshara Mahal in Madathukulam, near Udumalai, recently hosted the 7th edition of the Tamil Nadu State Level Kalaripayattu Competition. Organized by the Tamil Nadu Kalaripayattu Association, the event was inaugurated by District Sessions Judge Vijayakumar and DSP Sukumaran, marking a significant gathering of martial arts enthusiasts.




Participants, including a remarkably skilled young girl, competed across various categories such as stepping, swirling sword techniques, shield and sword play, among others. From toddlers as young as five to seasoned senior competitors, over 200 athletes from Chennai, Erode, Coimbatore, and Tiruppur demonstrated their skills, vying for the top spots in each category.






Noteworthy performances captivated all attendees, and the winners were rewarded with certificates and medals. Furthermore, victors are given the chance to represent at the national level competitions, with support from the central government's incentives. "Efforts are being made for these winners to participate in Olympic-level kolari competitions and preference in employment opportunities through Tamil Nadu government’s initiatives," said Veeramani, Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Kalaripayattu Federation.





Prominent guests included Poonthurai Soman from the Thiruvananthapuram Indian Kalaripayattu Federation, Shanmugapriya of Akshara Vidhya Mandir, Murthy from Vivekananda Vidyalaya, and Kumari Ganesan of the Indian Silambam Federation, all of whom lent their support and encouragement to the budding martial artists.






This event not only celebrates the traditional martial art of Kalaripayattu but also aims to nourish and create a robust sporting culture in Tamil Nadu by establishing teams at the district level.
