Awareness through Art: Coimbatore Artist Crafts Clay Sculpture on Illicit Liquor Tragedy

In response to the Kalakurichi illicit liquor tragedy that claimed over 50 lives, Coimbatore jewelry designer UMT Raja crafted a symbolic clay sculpture, raising awareness against bootleg alcohol.

Coimbatore: The tragic incident in Karunapuram, Kalakurichi, where drinking illicit liquor resulted in over 50 deaths, has sparked massive outcry against the Tamil Nadu government. Amidst this turmoil, UMT Raja, a jewelry designer from Kuniamuthur, Coimbatore, has brought attention to the menace through his art. Recently, he created a clay sculpture titled "The Demon of Packet Liquor is the Culprit for Deaths".

The sculpture ingeniously depicts the legs of the deceased bound together with a rope made of clay, intending to symbolize the binding nature of addiction. One leg dons a "thali" representing women, while the other bears a 'kumkuma' mark, commonly associated with married Hindu women. These elements are tied together with a clay packet of illicit liquor, reinforcing the devastating impact of alcohol abuse on families.
