Coimbatore Corporation Evaluates Locations for Overhead Bridges to Alleviate Traffic Congestion

Coimbatore Corporation is assessing three traffic-congested areas, including Ukkadam bus stand and Gandhipuram signal, for potential overhead bridges or subways.

Coimbatore: In an effort to tackle the severe traffic congestion in the city, Coimbatore Corporation has initiated a review of three major areas to determine the suitability for constructing overhead bridges or subways. The initiative aims to facilitate easier road crossings and improve traffic flow.

The sites currently under consideration include the bustling Ukkadam bus stand and the busy Gandhipuram signal. The Corporation, in collaboration with the Coimbatore Traffic Police, is conducting thorough feasibility studies to ensure the most effective solutions are adopted.

Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran highlighted the progress of the project, stating, “The Ukkadam bus stand presents a significant opportunity for the development of a subway that would connect the terminus directly to the opposite street, easing pedestrian flow and vehicle movement. The assessment of other locations is ongoing, and we are working closely with traffic officials to finalize the plans.”

On Saturday, Commissioner Prabhakaran, along with traffic police officers, personally inspected the Ukkadam and Gandhipuram sites. Although plans for implementation are still being refined, this initiative marks a proactive step towards resolving the long-standing congestion issues in key areas of Coimbatore.
