Coimbatore: A chilling case of familicide has come to light in Coimbatore's Ondipudur area, where an alcoholic father murdered his wife and two young daughters, initially attempting to pass it off as an accidental drowning.
Thangaraj (40), a daily wage laborer residing in MGR Nagar near the Weavers' Colony in Ondipudur, Coimbatore, was arrested for the murder of his wife Pushpa (35) and their two daughters, Harini (9) and Shivani (3).

Pushpa worked as a domestic help to support the family.
For the past six months, Thangaraj had reportedly stopped going to work and spent his days drinking at home. This led to frequent arguments and fights between the couple, creating a tense atmosphere in the household.
On July 8th morning, Thangaraj alarmed the neighbors, claiming that his wife and children were found in the water tank. He sought help, stating that he had managed to rescue one child but needed assistance to retrieve his wife and the other child.
Shocked neighbors immediately alerted the police. Upon arrival, the police recovered the bodies and sent them to the ESI Hospital for post-mortem examination.
During the initial questioning, Thangaraj feigned ignorance about how his family ended up in the water tank. However, as the police intensified their interrogation due to inconsistencies in his statements, the horrifying truth emerged.
Thangaraj confessed that the incident stemmed from an argument over money for alcohol. In a fit of rage, he pushed his elder daughter Harini into the water tank. When Pushpa jumped in to save Harini, Thangaraj threw the younger daughter Shivani into the tank as well and then closed the lid, leaving them to drown.
The police have registered a murder case against Thangaraj. He has been arrested and is under continued investigation. This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the devastating consequences of alcoholism and domestic violence.
