Public Urges Speedy Completion of Food Street Project Near VOC Park in Coimbatore

The Food Street project near VOC Park in Coimbatore, initiated with a Rs. 1 crore central government grant, faces delays. Citizens demand swift completion of remaining works for the hygienic street food initiative.

Coimbatore: The ambitious Food Street project near VOC Park in Coimbatore, aimed at providing quality and hygienic street food, is facing delays in completion, prompting public demand for its swift execution.

The central government had allocated Rs. 1 crore for this project in Coimbatore as part of a larger Rs. 4 crore initiative that includes similar projects in Chennai's Elliot Beach area, Velankanni roadside food street, and Mamallapuram's temple street. The project aims to offer clean, tasty, and health-friendly food options in a sanitized roadside area.

The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) began construction work in October 2023. Over 20 shops, each measuring 330 square feet, have been built in a linear stretch near the VOC Park grounds. These shops will be auctioned to vendors, with priority given to those who previously operated in the area.

As of April, about 80% of the construction work had been completed, including the building of shops, roofing, and painting. However, the remaining crucial infrastructure elements such as drinking water connections, electrical fittings, street lighting, and toilet facilities are yet to be installed.

The project, initially expected to be completed in March, has been continuously delayed. Despite the structures being in place, the food street remains unopened due to pending works. This delay has led to the accumulation of garbage in the area, with leaves and other waste spreading around the newly constructed shops.

Local residents are now urging the CCMC to focus on completing the remaining works promptly. They emphasize the need for regular cleaning of the area and swift finalization of the project. The public's expectation is that once completed, this food street will provide easy access to clean, quality street food for people from all economic backgrounds.

The Food Street project is part of a broader initiative to create designated areas for street food vendors, ensuring hygiene and quality while preserving the local culinary culture. As the project nears completion, there is growing anticipation among Coimbatore residents for this new culinary destination that promises to enhance the city's street food scene.
