MLA Vanathi Srinivasan Demands Immediate Rollback of Electricity Tariff Hike

Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan criticizes DMK government's 4.83% electricity tariff hike, citing increased burden on common people amid rising prices of essential commodities.

Coimbatore: Vanathi Srinivasan, MLA of Coimbatore South constituency, has strongly condemned the DMK government's recent decision to increase electricity tariffs in Tamil Nadu. In a press statement, she highlighted that the 4.83% hike in electricity charges for households and commercial establishments would generate an additional annual revenue of Rs 6,000 crore for the Electricity Board.

The MLA pointed out that this tariff hike comes immediately after the DMK alliance's victory in all 40 Lok Sabha constituencies, including Puducherry, and the Vikravandi Assembly by-election. She sarcastically remarked that this Rs 6,000 crore electricity tariff increase seems to be the DMK's "gift" to the people for their electoral support.

Vanathi Srinivasan emphasized that Tamil Nadu is already grappling with steep price hikes in essential commodities such as rice, pulses, and groceries. She noted that rice mill owners had previously cited increased electricity costs as a reason for raising rice prices. With this new tariff hike, she warned that rice prices are likely to surge further.

The BJP leader also criticized the DMK government for not reducing state taxes on petrol and diesel, resulting in higher fuel prices in Tamil Nadu compared to other states. She argued that the combination of high fuel prices and increased electricity tariffs would lead to a sharp rise in the cost of living, particularly affecting the poor and middle-class families.

Expressing her strong disapproval, Vanathi Srinivasan stated, "I vehemently condemn the DMK government for raising electricity tariffs without any concern for the people." She demanded that the government immediately withdraw the tariff hike to avoid facing severe public anger.
