The northern parts of the State may escape the heat wave from Wednesday as the day temperature is expected to drop, according to the Meteorological Department.
However, there may be just a slight relief from the blistering heat as the day temperature may continue to be three or four degree Celsius above normal in many places on Wednesday.
While interior places such as Vellore and Tiruttani sizzled, as the maximum temperature crossed 40 degree Celsius on Tuesday, sea breeze that set in before noon helped Chennaiites escape the heat wave. The weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 36.1 degree Celsius and 38.6 degree Celsius. Officials of the Meteorological Department said Chennai will experience a partly cloudy sky and the maximum temperature may hover around 39 degree Celsius for two more days. Some interior parts of Tamil Nadu may have thunderstorm activity with gusty winds.
Meteorologists dubbed the messages on social media that day temperature is set to rise up to 48 degree Celsius as hoax and advised residents not to panic.
Meanwhile, the Chennai Collectorate has issued a notice asking residents to take necessary precautions to handle the sweltering heat. Besides carrying umbrella or wearing hat, a bottle of water is a must while travelling. Residents also may avoid hot beverages and aerated drinks and use curtains to prevent heat in houses.
Metrowater plea
Chennai Metrowater has asked residents to conserve water resources during peak summer to overcome drought. Pointing out that if a drop of water leaks from a tap for 10 hours, it said it would amount to wastage of 20 litres. If the wastage occurs in 10 lakh houses, the volume of water wasted is estimated at two crore litres a day. It has asked residents who draw groundwater through electric motors to maintain a gap of nine hours between use. Rainwater harvesting structures must be cleaned to harness summer showers.
Summer vacation
The school education department has issued an order asking all schools in the State, irrespective of the Board of education, to close for summer vacation by April 22, in view of the warning of a harsh summer issued by the Met department.
