Heavy rainfall in Western Ghats causes significant increase in water levels of Pillur, Siruvani, and Aliyar dams in Coimbatore district. Officials report substantial inflow and improved water storage for the region.
Coimbatore: The water levels in major dams supplying water to Coimbatore and Tirupur districts have seen a significant rise following heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats region. The Pillur dam, a crucial water source for both districts, has experienced a ten-foot increase in its water level over the past three days.
As of Wednesday, the water level in Pillur dam stood at 97 feet against its full reservoir level of 100 feet. The inflow was recorded at 16,919 cusecs, while the discharge into the Bhavani river was 23,104 cusecs. A water resources department official stated that the inflow began to increase on Monday due to heavy rain in catchment areas, with the water level rising from 87 feet on Monday to 97 feet by Wednesday.
The Siruvani dam also witnessed a remarkable increase in its water level. Officials reported a 3.32-foot rise in just one day on Wednesday, with the total increase over the past three days being eight feet. The current water level in Siruvani dam stands at 38.67 feet, compared to its maximum height of 49.53 feet.
An official commented on the Siruvani dam's water level, saying, "With this water level, if we draw 50-70 MLD of drinking water to the city per day, we could draw it consistently for another three to four months. However, we expect heavy rain till Friday, and the dam level will increase further."
The Aliyar dam in Pollachi, which serves as the primary water source for 289 villages across Coimbatore and Tirupur, as well as some areas of Coimbatore city, has also seen an eight-foot increase in its water level over the last three days. On Wednesday, the water level in Aliyar dam was recorded at 95.80 feet, out of its maximum level of 120 feet.
The town of Valparai has been experiencing continuous rainfall for the past few days. In response to the weather conditions, the district administration has declared a holiday for schools in Valparai on Thursday.
The rising water levels in these dams bring relief to the region, ensuring a stable water supply for the coming months. However, officials continue to monitor the situation closely as more rainfall is expected in the coming days.
