Coimbatore Girl Meha Wins Silver Cup at International Skating Competition in Belgium

Meha, a young skater from Coimbatore, clinched three gold and three silver medals at the Splendor Grand Prix 2024 in Belgium, securing the overall silver cup. She received a warm welcome at the airport upon her return.

Coimbatore: A young skater from Coimbatore has brought glory to India by winning the silver cup at an international skating competition in Belgium. Meha, daughter of Arun Sakthi and Vidya Sampath, participated in the Splendor Grand Prix 2024, a prestigious international skating event held in Belgium.

The competition, which has been running for 55 years at the international level, saw Meha competing in six rounds. She showcased her exceptional skills by winning three gold medals and three silver medals across these rounds. Her outstanding performance secured her the second place overall, earning her the coveted silver cup.

Meha, a fourth-grade student, has impressed many with her achievement at such a young age in a major international competition. Notably, she is one of only two participants from India to win a cup in this skating event this year, with both winners hailing from Tamil Nadu.

This victory is particularly significant for Coimbatore's skating community. Despite the city having a 33-year history of skating training, winning a medal in this international competition had remained a dream until now. Meha's success has brought immense joy and pride to local skaters and coaches.

Upon her return to Coimbatore International Airport, Meha received a hero's welcome. Parents, friends, and coaches greeted her enthusiastically, presenting her with bouquets to celebrate her remarkable achievement.

Looking ahead, the young champion has set her sights on participating in the World Championship. "My goal is to compete in the World Championship and win cups for India," Meha stated, demonstrating her ambition and dedication to the sport.

Rahul, a coach, expressed optimism about the future of skating in the region. He believes that with continued training from this year onwards, competitors will have a good chance of winning cups in World Championship events.

Meha's success story serves as an inspiration to young athletes in Coimbatore and across India, highlighting the potential for international recognition in lesser-known sports like skating.
