AIADMK staged protests in key areas of Coimbatore against the recent electricity tariff hike. The demonstration, led by MLAs, saw hundreds of party workers participating with placards and slogans against the ruling DMK government.
Coimbatore: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) conducted protest demonstrations in key areas of Coimbatore, condemning the recent electricity tariff hike.
As part of these protests, a demonstration was held in front of the South Tahsildar Office, led by Coimbatore North MLA Amman K Arjunan.
MLA Amman K Arjunan, Singanallur MLA KR Jayaraman, and other key party officials participated in the protest wearing black attire.
Representatives from various industrial organizations also joined the demonstration.
Hundreds of AIADMK cadres raised slogans against the ruling DMK government, holding placards protesting the electricity tariff hike and the irregular distribution of goods in fair price shops.
Speaking to reporters after the protest, MLA Amman K Arjunan said, "Today, AIADMK is conducting protests across Tamil Nadu against the electricity tariff hike. This increase has severely affected everyone, from common people to those in higher positions. Yesterday, when the TV in my house wasn't working, my wife complained that the power had been cut for three hours. This is the situation in every household today. Like announcing Diwali bonuses, the DMK government has announced electricity tariff hikes as bonuses three times in the last three years."
Arjunan further questioned, "Why wasn't this electricity tariff hike announced during the Vikravandi by-election? All taxes have been increased in Tamil Nadu. The government has created a situation where common people need at least 20,000 rupees to make ends meet. In city buses, advertisements are blocking the view, making it difficult for visitors from other districts to see their destinations. The Transport Minister claims the department is running at a loss, despite good revenue from these advertisements. We expect them to increase transport fares within the next ten days."
The MLA also highlighted issues with fair price shops, stating that essential items like palm oil and lentils have not been properly distributed for the past three months. He emphasized that for common people to prosper, small-scale industries need to grow, but they are being suppressed.
Arjunan concluded by comparing the current situation to 2006, noting that after Amma's government came to power, Tamil Nadu became a power-surplus state, attracting industrialists. However, he claimed that currently, industrialists in Tamil Nadu are preparing to move to other states, primarily due to the high electricity charges.
