Public Demands Swift Completion of Overbridge Construction Across Palar River in Pollachi

Residents of Pollachi urge authorities to expedite the construction of an overbridge across the Palar River, which has been ongoing for two years, causing inconvenience to commuters and students.

Coimbatore: The construction of an overbridge across the Palar River on the route from Somandurai Chithur to Pollachi in Coimbatore district has been progressing at a snail's pace, much to the dismay of local residents. The project, which commenced two years ago with an estimated cost of seven crore rupees, was initially contracted to be completed within a year.

The road serves as the main route from Somandurai Chithur to Pollachi. Prior to the overbridge construction, a temporary bridge was in place. However, it was washed away by floods a year ago. The damaged low-level bridge remains unrepaired, and construction materials such as iron rods and stones have been dumped at various points across the river for the ongoing work.

As a result, students traveling to schools and colleges, as well as daily commuters, are forced to take a detour of eight kilometers via Thensangampalayam and Sungam. Local residents report that two-wheeler riders face significant risks while navigating the rough terrain of the incomplete bridge, with some even falling and sustaining injuries.

The public in the area has expressed their concerns about the slow progress of the construction work. They emphasize the urgent need for the swift completion of the overbridge to alleviate the inconvenience and safety risks faced by commuters. On July 24, local residents issued a formal request to the authorities, urging them to expedite the construction of the overbridge across the Palar River.
