Coastal states to get robotic boats for surveillance

A two-day seminar held at the DGP office in Chennai, to strengthen the security along the country's 7,516km coastline ended on a positive note with the decision to buy unmanned robotic boats to monitor intruders, terrorists.

"The Tamil Nadu Coastal Security Group (CSG) CID, which organised the second conference in Chennai, has planned to send a detailed representation to the central government through the state government to procure the boats, which are being used by many other countries to keep a tab on their coastal areas," said C Sylendra Babu, additional director-general of police, CSG-CID.

The boats will be fitted with high-definition cameras which can rotate and take pictures and send them instantly to the control room at the headquarters. The boats can be operated remotely from the control room through satellites. "If there is any suspicious movement in the sea, the control room will instantly send messages to the Navy, Coast Guard and CSG CID officials. Apart from this, senior police officers from coastal states have also decided to send a proposal to recruit and train coastal security personnel exclusively to cope with the terror strikes and sea attacks."

Moreover, former Navy and Coast Guard officials, who have been assigned to ride boats used by the CSG CID, will be permanently inducted in the police department of the states concerned.

"An advanced sensor module fitted on the boat will fuse data from sensors in existing navigational systems. This could be radar and AIS (automatic ID system), combined with daylight and infrared cameras," a senior police officer said. The Coastal Security Group, Tamil Nadu, is a pioneering police force in the coastal states that secure the coastal borders.

The CSG has been organising various programmes to share the experiences in the implementation of Coastal Security Schemes in order to improve the performance of the marine police force.

The officers responsible for coastal security in the coastal states of West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat and the Union territories of Puducherry, Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep participated in the seminar.
