Protest in Coimbatore demanding housing for sanitation workers

Tamil Puligal Party led a protest in Coimbatore's Ukkadam area, demanding immediate construction of houses for Arunthathiyar sanitation workers of CMC Colony, displaced due to flyover construction four years ago.

Coimbatore: A demonstration was held in Coimbatore's Ukkadam area on July 29, demanding immediate construction of houses for sanitation workers belonging to the Arunthathiyar community from CMC Colony. The protest was organized by the Tamil Puligal Party and led by its leader Nagai Thiruvalluvan.

The issue stems from the displacement of residents from CMC Colony due to the construction of a flyover in Ukkadam. The affected families were provided temporary tin sheds as alternative accommodation, with assurances from the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation that permanent houses would be built at the same location once the flyover work was completed.

However, despite the flyover construction nearing completion, the promised houses have not been built. As a result, these families have been living in tin sheds for over four years. They have been continuously petitioning the Municipal Corporation and the District Collector regarding this matter. Various political parties and organizations have also been persistently urging the authorities to construct the promised houses.

The demonstration saw participation from leaders of different political parties and organizations. Notable attendees included Jawahirullah, leader of the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, Sinthanai Selvan, MLA from Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, K. Ramakrishnan, General Secretary of Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, and former Coimbatore MP P.R. Natarajan. Residents of the affected area also joined the protest.

Protesters raised slogans demanding immediate construction of the houses. The demonstration continued despite light rain during the event. Prior to the protest, Jawahirullah had submitted a petition regarding this issue to the Coimbatore District Collector.

The protest highlights the ongoing struggle of the displaced sanitation workers and the need for immediate action from the authorities to provide them with proper housing as promised.
