Two-Day Seminar on Biodiversity Conservation and Livelihood Improvement at Coimbatore Forest College

A two-day seminar on biodiversity conservation and livelihood improvement began on July 30 at the Coimbatore Forest College campus, featuring experts from Japan and India discussing various aspects of forest management and wildlife conservation.


Coimbatore: A two-day seminar on biodiversity conservation and livelihood improvement commenced on July 30 at the Coimbatore Forest College campus. The event brought together experts from Japan and India to discuss various aspects of forest management, wildlife conservation, and sustainable development.

Siddharth Parameswaran, Development Division Expert from the Japan International Cooperation Agency's (JICA) India office in New Delhi, participated as a special guest. He highlighted JICA's four-phase financial assistance to Tamil Nadu for afforestation projects, biodiversity conservation, and green initiatives. Parameswaran noted that approximately 1.43 lakh hectares of private land have been afforested, benefiting around 87,000 farmers. He also emphasized that the collaboration between Indian and Japanese research centers in scientific research has ushered in a new era in bilateral relations.

Tamil Nadu Forest Department Secretary Senthil Kumar spoke about biodiversity conservation, livelihood improvement, and the department's use of satellite technology and artificial intelligence for various forestry applications.

Dhanish Baskar, a field officer from Core Earth Trust in Chennai, presented research on human-animal conflicts. Sridhar Vijaykrishnan from Sri Lanka and Nishant Srinivasan from the Indian Institute of Science submitted and discussed various research papers on human-animal conflicts.

The seminar was attended by several dignitaries, including Wakamatsu Iji, Senior Administrator of JICA, Srinivasa Reddy, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests of Tamil Nadu, Sudhanshu Gupta, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Special Task Force), and Ramasubramanian, Coimbatore Circle Conservator of Forests.

Anwardeen, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests of the Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Conservation and Green Climate Change Mission, delivered the welcome address. The seminar is scheduled to conclude on July 31.
