'Drug addiction and digital technology addiction on the rise among youth' - Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Balakrishnan

Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Balakrishnan addressed students at Bharathiar University on drug prevention, highlighting the increasing addiction to drugs and digital technology among youth.

Coimbatore: The National Service Scheme (NSS) of Bharathiar University and its affiliated colleges organized a 'Drug Free Campuses' rally event at Bharathiar University today. The event was presided over by Bharathiar University Registrar Roopa Gunaseelan and Ajithkumar Lal Mohan, member of the Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor's committee and Chairman of AJK College of Arts and Science. Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Balakrishnan attended as the chief guest.

Speaking at the event, Ajithkumar Lal Mohan said, "Drug circulation has been a long-standing issue in our country. In Tamil Nadu, drug usage is comparatively low. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has been taking continuous measures to prevent drug abuse. Higher Education Minister Ponmudy has instructed universities and colleges to conduct regular awareness programs on drug eradication. Based on this, we have organized this event."

Police Commissioner Balakrishnan stated that since the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister took office, the police department has been instructed to prioritize preventing crimes against women and children, and drug-related offenses. He mentioned that various measures are being taken in Coimbatore to prevent such crimes. The Commissioner further added that addiction to drugs and digital technology is increasing among today's youth, describing both as psychological issues.

Balakrishnan also commented on the influence of cinema, saying, "Movies can have a significant impact on society. Negative examples portrayed in such films can have major consequences. Therefore, students should not blindly believe what is shown in movies but think critically about it before acting."

Following this, an anti-drug pledge was taken under the leadership of the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner. Later, Commissioner Balakrishnan answered students' questions about drugs.

More than a thousand students from over a hundred colleges participated in the event.
