Highway Workers' Union Demands Withdrawal of Privatization Policy in Pollachi Meeting

Tamil Nadu Highway Workers' Union held a meeting in Pollachi, demanding the withdrawal of the state's privatization policy, which they claim will deprive rural youth of job opportunities.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Highway Workers' Union convened a meeting in Pollachi, voicing strong opposition to the state government's privatization policy. The union members expressed concerns that this policy would result in the loss of job opportunities for rural youth and urged the government to abandon the plan.

The meeting, held at the Bank Employees' Union building in Pollachi, Coimbatore district, was organized by the Tamil Nadu Highway Workers' Union. During the gathering, it was announced that the union would be celebrating its 25th anniversary Silver Jubilee on September 17th. The union decided to mark this milestone by conducting a special state conference, encouraging highway workers to participate along with their families.

Following the meeting, the State General Secretary, Amsaraj, addressed the media. He criticized the Tamil Nadu government's privatization policy, stating that it would allow private companies to engage in toll collection. Amsaraj further revealed that this move could potentially eliminate 3,500 highway worker positions.

The union leader emphasized that rural youth would lose significant employment opportunities due to this policy. He demanded that the government abandon its decision to establish a State Highways Authority. Additionally, the union called for the regularization of the 41-month termination period of highway workers as part of their service period.

To press their demands, Amsaraj announced that the union would stage a protest on August 19th, besieging the Highways Department office in Guindy, Chennai. He stressed that they would urge the DMK government, which claims to stand for social justice, to address their concerns.

The union also plans to leverage its upcoming 25th-anniversary celebration on September 17th to further emphasize their demands. Amsaraj stated that highway workers and their families would participate in this special state conference to collectively voice their concerns and pressurize the Tamil Nadu government to fulfill their demands.
