Thirumoorthy Dam in Tirupur to Release Water Early, Bringing Relief to PAP Farmers

Water Resources Department to release water from Thirumoorthy Dam on August 18, ten days ahead of schedule. Farmers at the tail-end of PAP canal welcome the decision, citing it as a major victory.

Tirupur: The Water Resources Department (WRD) has announced that water will be released from Thirumoorthy Dam on August 18, approximately 10 days earlier than initially planned. This decision has brought relief to farmers in the tail-end of the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) canal.

As of Wednesday, the dam level stood at nearly 49 feet against its maximum depth of 60 feet, with a storage of 1,269 million cubic feet (mcft). The early release has been made possible due to the completion of repair works along the 49-km contour canal on August 4, which allowed Thirumoorthy Dam to receive inflows upwards of 900 cusecs. On Wednesday, the inflow was recorded at 1,080 cusecs.

P. Velusamy, president of PAP Vellakoil Branch Water Conservation Association (Kangayam-Vellakoil), expressed his satisfaction, stating, "The early release of water from the planned schedule is a major victory for the farmers."

The storage levels in Parambikulam and Sholayar reservoirs, which channel water to Thirumoorthy Dam, have also provided comfort to farmers. The Parambikulam Dam level was reported at 70.56 feet, against its maximum depth of 72 feet. The current storage in Parambikulam Dam was 13,078 mcft, while Sholayar Dam held 5,005 mcft. Future rainfall in the catchment areas is expected to ensure a continuous water supply for repeated wettings through the 124-km PAP canal.

Sources have indicated that water release for periodic wettings will continue until the end of April next year, further assuring farmers of sustained irrigation support.
