Minister Saminathan initiated the release of water for second zone irrigation from Thirumoorthy Dam in Udumalpet, benefiting 94,201 acres in Tiruppur and Coimbatore districts for 120 days until December 16.
Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Minister for Information and Publicity, M P Saminathan, inaugurated the release of water for second zone irrigation from the Thirumoorthy Dam in Udumalpet, Tiruppur district. The water release will benefit approximately 94,201 acres of agricultural land in Tiruppur and Coimbatore districts.
The Thirumoorthy Dam, which irrigates about 3.77 lakh acres in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts, supplies water to four zones. The second zone irrigation, which began today, will cover Udumalpet, Madathukulam, Tiruppur, Palladam, Dharapuram, and Kangeyam taluks in Tiruppur district, as well as Pollachi and Sulur taluks in Coimbatore district.
Public Works Department officials stated that 8,000 million cubic feet of water would be released over 120 days, from today until December 16, in four cycles with appropriate intervals. Currently, the Thirumoorthy Dam's water level stands at 57.21 feet against its full capacity of 60 feet. The inflow to the dam is 889 cubic feet per second, with 250 cubic feet being released through the main canal. Officials mentioned that the water discharge would be gradually increased.
The water release ceremony was attended by District Collector Kris Raj, Pollachi MP K. Shanmugasundaram, Chief Engineer Murugesan, Executive Engineer of Thirumoorthy Division Mahendran, Assistant Executive Engineer of Thirumoorthy Dam Adhisivan, Assistant Executive Engineer of Udumalpet Canal Division Babu alias Sabeeshwaran, Assistant Engineer of Thirumoorthy Dam Marimuthu, other public works department officials, and farmers.
