Death threats over loan repayment: Victim petitions Coimbatore Police Commissioner for protection

A Kuniyamuthur resident has sought protection from the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner, alleging death threats to his family over loan repayment demands.

Coimbatore: Shanthu Muhammad from Kuniyamuthur has petitioned the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner seeking protection for his family, alleging death threats over loan repayment demands.

Shanthu Muhammad's son, Habib Rahman, was involved in the scrap business and also lent money at high interest rates to people in need, borrowing from friends and relatives. A few months ago, Habib Rahman's wife and daughter passed away due to illness, causing him severe mental distress. Unable to continue his business and repay loans, he attempted suicide but later received medical treatment.

Despite repaying a significant portion of the borrowed amount, the lenders allegedly refused to acknowledge the payments and threatened Habib Rahman at the hospital, demanding full repayment. They also reportedly visited Habib Rahman's house, physically harassed the women there, and behaved indecently. Following this incident, Shanthu Muhammad attempted to file a complaint at the Kuniyamuthur police station, but the police reportedly refused to accept it.

Habib Rahman stated, "I had borrowed money from 15 people for business purposes and had been paying interest for three years. After my wife and daughter's deaths, I couldn't pay the interest due to mental distress. I attempted suicide and then received medical treatment. Meanwhile, the lenders physically harassed the women in our house and have been issuing death threats to me and my family for the past week."

He added, "I had borrowed 3.5 crore rupees from 15 people and have repaid a significant portion. However, they are not acknowledging the repayments and are demanding the entire amount as if I haven't paid anything. They are also spreading false information in WhatsApp groups, claiming that I borrowed 11 crores from over 60 people. Based on this, some people are falsely claiming to have lent me money and are threatening me for repayment."

Shanthu Muhammad has requested the Police Commissioner to provide protection for his family and take action against those who behaved indecently with the women in his family.
