Tourist Car Drivers Petition Against Private Taxi Companies Affecting Livelihood

Tourist car owners and drivers from Mettupalayam submit petition to Coimbatore Collector, alleging livelihood threats from private taxi companies like Red Taxi, Go Taxi, Ola, and Uber.

Coimbatore: The Mettupalayam Tourist Car Owners and Drivers Welfare Association has submitted a petition to the Coimbatore District Collector's office, alleging that their livelihood is being threatened by private taxi companies such as Red Taxi, Go Taxi, Ola, and Uber. The association has requested appropriate action to address their concerns.

In their petition, the association members claim that vehicles belonging to these private taxi companies from Coimbatore and surrounding areas wait for hours in their locality to pick up customers for return trips. This practice, they allege, is severely impacting their business and causing significant hardship to their families.

The petitioners expressed their distress over the situation, stating that their means of earning a living is being jeopardized by these companies' operations. They have appealed to the authorities to find a permanent solution to this issue, which they say is crucial for their survival in the industry.

The tourist car owners and drivers from Mettupalayam, a town known for its proximity to popular hill stations, are particularly concerned about the long-term implications of this trend on their business. They fear that if left unchecked, this practice could lead to a complete loss of their customer base and render them jobless.

The petition highlights the growing tension between traditional taxi services and new-age ride-hailing companies, a phenomenon that has been observed in many parts of the country. As the gig economy continues to expand, local authorities are increasingly being called upon to mediate and find equitable solutions that protect the interests of all stakeholders in the transportation sector.
