A man was fatally attacked by a wild elephant while answering nature's call near Thondamuthur, Coimbatore. The incident highlights the increasing human-elephant conflicts in the region.
Coimbatore: In a tragic incident, a man was killed by a wild elephant near Thondamuthur in Coimbatore district on Wednesday (Sep. 13) morning. The victim, identified as Devaraj from Attukal area, was attacked while answering nature's call in the early hours.
The incident occurred in the Gembunur circle of the Thadagam forest range. Devaraj had ventured out for his morning ablutions when he encountered the wild elephant, which attacked him, resulting in his immediate death at the scene.
Forest and police officials were promptly informed about the incident. The police arrived at the location, recovered the body, and initiated an investigation into the matter.
The Thadagam, Thondamuthur, and Marudamalai areas in Coimbatore district have been witnessing increased elephant movement in recent times. Wild elephants frequently stray from forest areas, causing damage to agricultural lands and residential areas in these regions.
Following the incident, relatives of the deceased staged a road blockade in front of the Thondamuthur police station, accusing the forest and police departments of negligence in handling such situations.

In response to the tragedy, Thondamuthur Ravi, the DMK North District Secretary of Coimbatore, visited the victim's family to offer condolences. He also provided financial assistance to the bereaved family.
