Officials Survey Alternative Route for 1 km Railway Overbridge at NGGO Colony

Officials from various departments surveyed alternative routes for the upcoming 1 km railway overbridge at NGGO Colony, Coimbatore. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion caused by the existing level crossing.

Coimbatore: Officials from the Railway, Transport, State Highways, Rural Development, and Local Administration departments conducted a survey to identify alternative routes in preparation for the construction of a 1-kilometer railway overbridge at NGGO Colony in Ashokapuram Panchayat near Thudiyalur, Coimbatore.

The proposed overbridge, estimated to cost Rs. 32 crore, will connect Mettupalayam Road to Sakthi Road via Edikarai, passing through NGGO Colony. This route is crucial as it serves several schools and colleges, experiencing heavy traffic during peak hours. The existing railway level crossing in the area causes significant congestion when closed for passing trains.

Construction of the overbridge is set to begin on October 1, following the completion of land acquisition processes. As the railway gate will be closed from this date, officials are working to establish alternative routes for commuters.

During the survey, a public consultation meeting was held at the Ashokapuram Panchayat office. District Councilor S. Karthik, Panchayat Vice President Shanmugasundaram, Union Councilors Manikam and Kalasantharam, Ward Members Sudhakar and Sriram, along with other public representatives and residents, participated in the discussion.

Residents raised concerns about the alternative route selection, referring to a consultation meeting held six months ago where the difficulties faced by the public and vehicle drivers were discussed. They requested clarity on the alternative route plans.

Officials responded that they have surveyed a potential alternative route via Vellakinar Housing Unit. They assured that the district administration would soon announce the finalized alternative route for public use during the construction period.
