The Azhiyar New Ayacut Irrigation Association passed a resolution to stop water supply from Nirar Dam to the PAP project from October to January annually, citing concerns over water distribution and outdated records.
Coimbatore: The Azhiyar New Ayacut Irrigation Association has passed a resolution demanding the cessation of water supply from Nirar Dam to the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) during the months of October to January each year. This decision was made during a meeting held at the Vedhanayagam Auditorium in Sangampalayam.
The meeting, presided over by Association President Asokkumar, Secretary Prabhakaran, Treasurer Murugesan, and Azhiyar Dam Project Committee Chairman Senthil, addressed several critical issues concerning water distribution and management in the region.

One of the primary concerns raised was the outdated irrigation schedule currently in use, which has led to numerous problems in water distribution due to the subdivision of ayacut areas. The association called for updating the water distribution list with the names of new landowners, as the current list still contains the names of those who have sold their lands.
The resolution highlighted the agreement regarding the PAP project, which stipulates that water should be supplied from Nirar to Kerala only until the construction of the Idamalayar Dam. However, despite the dam's completion many years ago, Tamil Nadu continues to provide water. The association urged Tamil Nadu authorities to cease this water supply, particularly for this year, within the next 10 days as October approaches.
Additionally, the association requested the desilting of canals in town panchayat areas, similar to the work done in village panchayats under the 100-day work scheme. They also expressed gratitude to the Water Resources Department officials and the project committee for their efforts in directing surplus water to fill ponds and tanks.
Other resolutions passed included the need for renovating shutters in branch canals and addressing various irrigation-related issues in the region.
