Coimbatore: Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Balakrishnan addressed the media today following a yoga training concluding ceremony for police families at the Coimbatore Police Training School campus.

During the press meet, he provided details about the early morning incident where a rowdy named Alwin was shot and apprehended at the Codissia grounds.

Commissioner Balakrishnan stated that Alwin, the apprehended individual, had 15 cases against him, including three murders and two attempted murders. He explained that a Non-Bailable Warrant (NBW) had been issued against Alwin last year for a murder case within the Race Course police station limits. Special police teams had been searching for him in various locations for the past three to four months.

The Commissioner revealed that about 15 days ago, they received information about Alwin staying in another state. When a special team went to apprehend him, he managed to escape. However, based on a tip-off received early this morning, police attempted to arrest Alwin in the Codissia area.

During the arrest attempt, Alwin allegedly attacked Head Constable Rajkumar with a knife. In response, Sub-Inspector Karthikeyan reportedly shot Alwin in the leg in self-defense. Both the injured head constable and the shot suspect are currently receiving treatment at the government hospital, Balakrishnan added.

The Commissioner also mentioned that they maintain a history sheet to monitor habitual offenders who consistently engage in criminal activities. He assured that preventive measures are being taken, and those disturbing public peace are being dealt with under the Goondas Act.
