Chaos erupted at Mettupalayam Municipal Council meeting as AIADMK councilors threw a tumbler and tore documents. Police intervened and filed cases against nine AIADMK councilors for obstructing government officials and damaging public property.
Coimbatore: The ordinary meeting of the Mettupalayam Municipality turned chaotic on September 27, as AIADMK councilors engaged in violent behavior, resulting in police intervention and legal action.
The meeting, chaired by Council Chairperson Mehareeba Parveen Ashraf Ali and attended by Commissioner Amudha and Deputy Chairperson Arulvadivu Munusamy, began with 32 resolutions presented for council review. Tensions escalated when a heated argument broke out between AIADMK and DMK councilors over public issues.
During the altercation, Ward 7 AIADMK Councilor Mohammed Ibrahim, also known as Saleem, threw a silver tumbler intended for drinking water. The tumbler narrowly missed the Chairperson and Commissioner, creating a tense atmosphere in the council hall.
The situation further deteriorated when Ward 18 AIADMK Councilor Sunilkumar angrily tore up a copy of the resolution document and threw it in the air. Police officers entered the meeting hall to mediate the situation.
Following these incidents, Council Chairperson Mehareeba Parveen Ashraf Ali declared all 32 resolutions as "passed" before retreating to her office. She later announced a ban on nine AIADMK councilors from attending the next two council meetings as punishment for their disruptive behavior.
In response, AIADMK councilors staged a sit-in protest inside the council hall. Police forces, led by Inspector Manikandan, were deployed to the Mettupalayam Municipal Office to maintain order.
Negotiations between the protesting AIADMK councilors and officials, including the Chairperson, Commissioner, Inspector Manikandan, and Sub-Inspectors Gurusanthira Vadivel and Anandakumar, continued late into the night.
As AIADMK councilors finally left the council hall, tensions flared again outside the municipal office, with supporters of both AIADMK and DMK shouting slogans. Police intervened to prevent physical confrontations and dispersed the crowds.

The charges include obstructing government officials from performing their duties, intimidation, and damaging public property. The police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
