Coimbatore: The Labour Department in Coimbatore conducted extensive raids on various shops and firms on Gandhi Jayanti to ensure compliance with holiday regulations. The inspections aimed to verify whether employees were granted leave or compensated with double pay for working on the national holiday.

Officials inspected a total of 192 shops and establishments across the city. The raids revealed that 75 shops and 89 eateries, totaling 164 establishments, were in violation of the regulations. These businesses either failed to provide the mandated holiday or did not pay double wages to employees working on Gandhi Jayanti.

According to a release from the Labour Department, the violators will face penalties ranging from ₹500 to ₹10,000. The fine amount will be determined based on the number of employees in each establishment. This action underscores the department's commitment to enforcing labour laws and protecting workers' rights.

In addition to addressing holiday violations, the Labour Department has urged the public to remain vigilant against child labour and bonded labour practices. Citizens are encouraged to report instances of child labour through the Pencil Portal website or by calling the helpline number 1098. For complaints regarding bonded labour, individuals can dial 1800 4252 650 or 155214.

These measures reflect the government's ongoing efforts to ensure fair labour practices and safeguard the rights of workers across various sectors in Coimbatore.
