Apartment dwellers near Bellandur lake told to transport waste to STPs

It’s not just industries that have come under the scanner of the State government, which is rushing to ‘take action’ before the next National Green Tribunal hearing on Bellandur lake.

Over 157 apartments near the lake, which are being inspected by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, will be asked to transport their untreated waste to Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs).

During an inspection of the progress of works on the lake on Tuesday, Additional Chief Secretary (Urban Development Department) Mahendra Jain said the government will issue a notification within two days making it mandatory for all apartments to handle their untreated waste.

“It is up to the apartment to find a way to transport all their untreated waste to STPs (operated by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board) along the Vrishabhavathi Valley. They will have to pay the cost of transportation and a fee to the BWSSB to treat this waste,” said Mr. Jain, saying that strict action would be initiated if waste continues to be dumped in the lake.
