Marumalarchi Makkal Iyakkam Petitions for Installation of Periyar, Anna and Ambedkar Portraits at Coimbatore Collectorate

Marumalarchi Makkal Iyakkam has submitted a petition to Coimbatore District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar requesting installation of portraits of social reformers Periyar, Arignar Anna and Dr B.R. Ambedkar at the District Collectorate premises in compliance with government orders.

Coimbatore: Marumalarchi Makkal Iyakkam has filed a formal petition with the Coimbatore District Collector seeking the installation of portraits of three legendary social reformers at the District Collectorate premises.

The petition, submitted to District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar, specifically requests the display of portraits of social reformer Thanthai Periyar, former Chief Minister Arignar Anna, and architect of the Indian Constitution Dr B.R. Ambedkar at prominent locations within the Collectorate building.

According to the petitioners, existing government orders mandate the installation of these portraits in government offices across Tamil Nadu. The Marumalarchi Makkal Iyakkam representatives emphasized that these three personalities played pivotal roles in shaping modern Tamil Nadu's social reform movement and championing the causes of social justice, rationalism, and equality.

The petition highlights that while many government offices have already complied with these directives, the Coimbatore District Collectorate has yet to install the portraits. The organization has urged the authorities to take immediate action to rectify this oversight.

Thanthai Periyar was a prominent social activist who fought against caste discrimination and superstitions. Arignar Anna served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and was known for his contributions to Tamil language and literature. Dr B.R. Ambedkar was the principal architect of the Indian Constitution and a champion of Dalit rights and social reform.

The petitioners have requested the Collector to issue necessary orders for the procurement and installation of these portraits at the earliest. They believe that displaying these portraits will serve as a reminder of the ideals of social justice and equality that these leaders stood for.
