Train blockade: cine-director Gauthaman and farmers held

Thanjavur: Hundreds of farmers and activists of Cauvery Rights Retrieval Committee (CRRC) were arrested when they blocked trains at various places in five districts -Tiruchy, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore - pressing a charter of seven demands including immediate constitution of Cauvery Management Board (CMB) as pre the final orders of Cauvery tribunal.



Cine-Director Gauthaman also took part in the train blockade.

The CRRC had announced that its activists would resort to ‘serial train blockade’ in all the five districts for five days from May 15 to 21 pressing their demands. It has also announced that the farmers would block trains in rural areas too.

Led by CRRC coordinator P Maniyarasan, a group of farmers blocked the Mayiladuthurai-Tiruchy passenger train at Ayyanapuram railway station in Budalur taluk. Among others cine-director Gauthaman and Tamilar Desiya Munnani general secretary Ayyanapuram Murugesan took part in the stir. Following which, the train left for Tiruchy after a delay of two hours.

The CRRC urged the Central government to drop its proposed move to set up ‘single tribunal’ and to declare delta region as protected agriculture zone. Their other demands included waiver of all crop loans without any discrimination, sanction of higher quantum as drought compensation from the Nationnal Disaster Response Fund and linking of rivers. Besides, distribution of distribution of Rs 15 lakh to the family of farmers who either died of cardiac arrest or committed suicide following the failure of their crops due to severe drought.
