Residents struggle to cope with heavy rain, power cuts

Citizens were put to hardship on Wednesday after power supply was disrupted in many parts of the city. Several areas also witnessed heavy rainfall that led to tree falls and traffic snarls in central, south and east Bengaluru.

The IPL eliminator match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders was disrupted owing to rain.

Large parts of Bengaluru plunged into darkness as there was no power supply from Wednesday evening. Scores of citizens took to social networking sites to complain that Bescom helplines were constantly engaged and were unable to get information.

Four hours

Bescom officials were unable to restore power for more than four hours after the supply was disrupted, and attributed the outage to incoming supply failure. They claimed that power would be restored in parts of east Bengaluru late on Wednesday and said technical fault at Hoody despatch centre had resulted in load shedding in many areas, including Whitefield, Kadugodi, Ulsoor, Indiranagar, Benson Town, Fraser Town, Cox Town, Shanthinagar and Wilson Garden.

Traffic jams

Ganesh S., a resident, complained that the power back-up too ran out of charge compelling them to spend the evening in darkness. Another motorist, who was stuck on Ram Mohan Roy Road, said she was returning from work and was stuck in the traffic for a long time.

BBMP officials said incidents of tree fall were reported in Commercial Street, Sultanpalya, Cox Town, and Tannery Road.

There was waterlogging in Indiranagar, Ulsoor and Thippasandra.
