Ten persons, including eight women passengers, were killed and 24 passengers were injured after a state owned transport corporation bus (TNSTC) bus rammed a truck near Vallam on Friday night.
The ill-fated TNSTC bus was heading towards Kumbakonam from Tiruppur carrying around 60 passengers. The truck carrying iron rods was on its way to Thanjavur from Tiruchy. After crossing a road over bridge on the Tiruchy-Thanjavur national highway at Vallam, the driver of the truck suddenly took a right turn without giving any signal. Following the sudden turn, the driver of the bus attempted to apply brake. However, the front right tyre of the bus burst and subsequently rammed against the truck pushing it back to a certain distance.
On the impact, seven persons including bus driver Ravichandran (45), truck driver Sathish Kumar (32) and five women passengers died on the spot while 25 others sustained injuries. All the injured were admitted to Thanjavur medical college hospital. Of them, two more women succumbed to injuries soon after they were admitted to TMCH last night while one more person namely Bhuvana (24), resident of Mannargudi in Tiruvarur district, succumbed to her injuries early today.
Besides bus driver Ravichandran (45) of Palladam and truck driver Satheesh Kumar (32) of Woriur in Tiruchy, others who died in the mishap were identified as Poonguzhali (40) of Kumbakonam, Arulmozhi (38) of Kumbakonam, Malini (19) of Irukkaiyur, T Pazhur, Ariyalur district, Anandhi (21), Paravakottai near Mannargudi, Hemalaltha (25), Devi Nagar, Thanjavur, Durga Devi (24) of Needamangalam, Tamilpriya (19) of Koovathur near Orathanadu and Bhuvana (21) of Mannargudi.
Of the deceased, Anandhi and Bhuvana were studying BE (Third Year) at a reputed private engineering college in Perambalur while Malini (19) was studying BE (Third Year) at a private engineering college in Tiruchy.
Collector A Annadurai and top police officials rushed to the spot and supervised relief and rescue measures. Police retrieved the bodies and sent them for postmortem.
On being informed, Tamil Nadu Transport Minister M R Vijayabhaskar visited the hospital and consoled the injured passengers admitted in the hospital.
Vallam police have registered a case and are investigating.
