Nilavembu row: Chennai cops say no case against Kamal Haasan

Replying to a petitioner who asked the Madras high court to direct them to register a case against Kamal Haasan over the Nilavembu row, the Chennai city police have said there is no prima facie case against the actor.

The actor had requested his supporters, through his Twitter handle -@ikamalhaasan -on October 25, not to offer the drink to anyone without scientific proof that it cured dengue, amid an outbreak of the disease across the state.

Many siddha practitioners raised their voice against Kamal, while several state ministers also condemned his tweet. Nilavembu is being distributed by police per sonnel, collectors, schools and at many other places free of cost. State health minister C Vijaya

Baskar and other senior ministers have also been involved in the drive to distribute the drink through various state agencies.

Meanwhile, the petitioner G Devarajan filed a plea with the Madras high court urging it to direct the police to register a case against the actor for his tweet.

Following this, Justice M S Ramesh passed an order to police personnel to scrutinise the veracity of his claim and file an FIR after investigation if a prima facie case could be made out.

The petition was forwarded to the Chennai city police and a team of cybercrime experts scrutinised the petition and held discussions with legal officials.

"There were no grounds to take action against the actor as there was no criminal intention. The actor had only tweeted to his fans not to distribute Nilavembu without taking the advice of doctors," said a senior police officer.
