More than 1 crore pledge to vote fairly in Tamil Nadu

In a first of its kind initiative in India, more than one crore people pledged to elect without selling their votes in the upcoming assembly elections all over the State.

The Election Commission had earlier planned to conduct a oath taking event in all the Districts, with the help of the respective District Administrations to ensure 100 per cent fair polling in the State.

According to a release, around 1,64,32,213 people including NGO's, students, government staff, teachers and other volunteers participated in the pledging ceremony.

Chennai recorded the most with around 1740120 people participating in 4396 venues.

Coimbatore recorded 1315170 people in 6230 venues.



The pledge was administered at 6,230 locations and places like Government offices, the District Election Officers' offices, the RO offices, ARO offices, BLO's offices, bus stands and parks. Voters, including college students, young voters, industrial workers, women, senior citizens, members of various Resident Welfare Associations, state and central government servants, and police officials.

According to an official press statement, they pledged to take steps to ensure inducement-free and fair general elections.
