Farmers can go for Cotton Sowing, predicts TNAU

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports, India ranks first among the Cotton producing countries with a production capacity of up to 28 million bales (1 bale = 170kg) in an area of 11.9 million acres.

The prevailing drought conditions and unpredictable monsoons have hollowed the cotton production during the years. Reports indicate that Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Vietnam are now the global suppliers of Cotton. The districts of Perambalur, Salem, Trichy, Dharmapuri, Ariyalur and Cuddalore are the major cotton producers in the state of Tamilnadu.

Based on the prices at the Konganapuram regulated market, the Price Forecasting Scheme of Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies (CARDS), TNAU has predicted the price for cotton. The CARDS state that, during December 2016 -January 2017 the price of superior quality extra-long staple cotton would vary between Rs.6,000 - 6,200 per quintal.

TNAU, has advised the farmers to follow the predicted pricing structure and SOW accordingly.
