On June 19th, the state government directed to terminate 500 tasmac within the state, out of which 60 were from Coimbatore district. The leaders of political parties and social activists condemned that the act as an eyewash, as most of the shops terminated were low income generating tasmacs.
Today, the Bharathiya Janatha party members led by their Party's State Secretary, Vanathi Srinivasan staged a protest demanding closure of the Tasmac shop at Sulllivan Street, Raja Street which is very close to Kamatchi Amman temple, a 100 year old temple. More than 150 members of the BJP party participated in the protest demanding the state government to cease the operations of the tasmac shops around residential areas, educational institutions, places of worship and public gathering places.
They held placards and raised slogans indicating the repercussions caused by tasmac on the well-being of the people. The police controlled the chaos and arrested the protestors.
