Curfew remains in force in Kashmir, death toll climbs to 43

While three more civilians, including two women, have been killed and three others injured in a fresh incident of clashes in Qazigund area of South Kashmir since Monday night, restrictions and a complete shutdown continued across the valley for the 11th day on Tuesday.

Two people - Saida Begum and Showkat Ahmad - died when the Army opened fire in “self-defence in an effort to move out from the spot” when it was pelted with stones by miscreants at Devsar near Qazigund in Kulgam district on Monday evening.

Another woman, Neelofar, succumbed to her injuries in the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences here on Monday night, officials said. The condition of her child, who was also injured in the incident, is said to be stable.

With this, the death toll in the ongoing trouble has gone up to 43.

A police spokesman said an Army mobile domination patrol party, while moving towards Devsar, tried to clear a road blockade erected by miscreants at Churaht near Qazigund. While removing the obstruction the party came under heavy stone-pelting by the miscreants from two sides. “Some miscreants also tried to snatch weapons from them and tried to set ablaze the vehicles,” the police spokesman said. “Despite repeated warnings, the mob did not disperse and the Army fired in self-defence to move out from the spot,” the spokesman added.

In view of the incident, the authorities decided to continue strict curfew restrictions.

The trouble started on July 8 following the death of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani in Anantnag district.

Separatists have already extended the general strike call till July 21 afternoon, while a complete shutdown call has been given for Friday, July 22. In a joint statement, the separatists have also called for observing “black day” on Wednesday in protest against the series of killings in the Valley.
