Mankarai, a small hamlet at the foothills of Anaikati hills is deemed to be an important elephant corridor.
It is widely reported, that men use the reserve area at Mankarai as an open bar for liquor consumption, especially during weekends. The liquor bottles, water packets and food remains, left behind by the trespassers pose a serious threat to the environment and wild animals.
The animals especially elephants markedly get affected because of the broken bottle bits and plastics.
Unknowingly, the wild animals that graze around the zone consume these plastics and decomposed food leading to grievous issues. The recent series of elephant deaths due to intestinal infections and ailments could be caused to due to consumption of plastics, experts say.
Hence, today the NGO's and social activist joined hands to clean the animal corridor zones at Mankarai.
They collected huge piles of plastics, liquor bottles and water packets that was spread all over the area. The NGO's urged that the tasmac's close to protected reserve areas and animal corridor should be terminated with immediate effect to cease environmental degradation and ensure wildlife habitats.
