Elephant knocked down by West Coast Express near Tamilnadu-Kerala border

An Elephant death has been reported at the Tamilnadu-Kerala border.

Reports state, the 10-year-old female elephant was knocked down by Mangalore-Chennai West Coast Express at around 5.50 am near Pudhupadhi railway gate area. The elephant was thrown away into a 20 feet deep pit, adjoining the track.

The forest officials along with veterinarians immediately rushed to the spot. The medical team provided required first aid assistance but unfortunately, the elephant died without responding to the treatment.

The forest officials have initiated the investigation and planned for a Post Mortem.

This dolorous event marks the 10th death of elephant in about 40 days of time. Environmentalists allege that the encroachments around the animal corridors have become a pressing issue, these days.

The District Forest Officer Periyasamy stated that the loco pilots have been instructed to follow specific instructions like reduced speed and use of horns at all animal crossing places. The forest department will initiate strict action against loco pilots who violate the rules, he stressed.
