Flood does not spare Goda Park either

Nashik: Goda Park, the pet project of MNS chief Raj Thackeray, did not fare well in the face of the severe floods that washed away many parts of the city on Tuesday.

The under-development Goda Park that lies on the banks of the river near Asarambapu bridge suffered severe damages with paver blocks, concrete and poles coming off due to incessant rains. The civic body will soon start repair works.

The prestigious 13-km long Goda Park constructed on the lines of the Sabarmati riverfront project was floated before Thackeray formed MNS and was part of the ruling Shiv Sena in Nashik.

The park has a jogging track that stretches 9 km from Gharpure Ghat to Gangapur village and Ramwadi to the right of theGodavari within the Nashik Municipal Corporation limits. The park stretches up to 4km on the left side of the river.

Goda Park and Godavari beautification project had been foremost on the minds of the ruling MNS since the 2012 civic elections and have been one of the poll planks of the party.

"I had anticipated this when the concept was floated. The park lies on the flood line and NEERI has recommended that no construction be carried out in such areas," said Sudhir Kamble, a resident.

A regular visitor to the park, Shilpa Patil said that while it was a good place for recreation, the civic body had overlooked many constraints while building the park.

An NMC official said, "We are taking review of the losses and will repair the damage soon. Such floods occur once in decades."
